The vision for Chiesi Gardens as told by ABOUT:Journal

Urban regeneration is not simply a matter of buildings. It is a process that redefines relationships, creates new ecosystems and imagines different ways of living in the city. It is from this perspective that the new issue of ABOUT: Journal was created, in collaboration with Chiesi Gardens.

Entitled Breaking New Ground / Nuovi Orizzonti, the Journal sets out to tell the story of a project while it is still taking shape, opening up the construction site as a space for dialogue, knowledge and participation.

The issue presents Chiesi Gardens as a potential model for adaptive reuse and an architecture of care, capable of placing at its centre the relationship between business, the local community, research and international culture.

This vision runs throughout the Journal, which brings together contributions from architects, landscape designers, innovators and international observers. Among them are Victor Jones, co-founder of fièvre + jones (Los Angeles), Pim de Morree, co-founder of Corporate Rebels (Eindhoven), and Porzia Bergamasco, journalist and design curator.

Roberto Zancan’s article, meanwhile, explores the construction site as a place of collective learning, driven by the ongoing effort to bring together people, disciplines and different perspectives as a catalyst for cultural innovation.

Alongside these short essays are conversations with the people at the heart of the project: Andrea Chiesi, Head of Special Projects at Chiesi Group; Aura Luz Melis, partner at Inside Outside; and architects Harold Vermeiren (51N4E) and Nemanja Zimonjić(TEN), who describe the collective, interdisciplinary journey accompanying the transformation of our site into the future Chiesi Gardens.

As summarised in the editorial (Ri)costruire la città ((Re)building the City) by Alessandro Valenti and Giulia Ricci: “Cities do not only need new buildings. They need new relationships. And perhaps this is the most radical form of regeneration.”

Care, ecosystem, innovation, relationships, porosity: these are the words that recur throughout the pages, forming a shared vocabulary that goes beyond the boundaries of architecture to open up a multidisciplinary dialogue on the transformation of cities and the role that businesses, institutions and communities can play in creating shared value.
